NOAA coastal imagery
NOAA distributes coastal orthophotography through collection-specific downloads and ImageServer services organized by band combination and pixel type. This publication documents selected Connecticut collections and demonstrates their use in spectral comparison and raster analysis.
The related analytical publication, Reading beyond the visible, compares matched RGB and CIR products, contrast stretches and vegetation indices.
The NOAA imagery directory provides service endpoints. The Digital Coast data inventory links acquisition metadata, original files and tile indexes. A service can contain several acquisitions; its extent does not imply continuous coverage or a uniform collection date.
Coastal Connecticut · 2004
The September 2004 ADS40 acquisition covers approximately 930 square miles of the Connecticut coast. NOAA produced natural-color and color-infrared orthophotos at 0.50 m resolution. The sensor had a documented 12-bit dynamic range; the distributed 8-bit and 16-bit products are processed representations of that acquisition. The original research supported mapping of invasive Phragmites australis. Acquisition metadata: NOAA InPort 48415
Collection dates are September 20 and 22, 2004. The coverage envelope is −73.811097 to −71.755583 longitude and 40.911606 to 41.658672 latitude. Original orthophotos use NAD83 / UTM zone 18N. Refer to tile footprints when selecting data near the collection boundary.

New Haven and New London · 2017
The infrared service includes separate 2017 near-infrared mosaics for New Haven and New London/Groton. NOAA's data inventory identifies the following collections and metadata records:
| Collection | Acquisition metadata | Original files |
|---|---|---|
| New Haven · 8433 | InPort 50378 | NOAA download directory |
| New London/Groton · 8440 | InPort 50578 | NOAA download directory |
The New London/Groton imagery was acquired on August 17, 2017 with a Trimble DSS and distributed at 0.50 m ground sample distance. NOAA reports cubic-convolution resampling and a 30 m USGS NED elevation input for orthorectification. Acquisition was not tide coordinated. These mosaics are not paired observations of the 2004 acquisition. Comparisons across years require separate assessment of registration, illumination, tide, processing and land-cover change.
Data layers
Each layer page includes a live preview, its official ImageServer endpoint, acquisition links and downloadable metadata. RGBN services remain available for reference; this publication does not assign them to the 2004 acquisition.

Access and preservation
Maps request imagery directly from NOAA. Archived imagery is not served, including during source outages.
The retained selection comprises 122 CIR 8-bit originals, 121 CIR 16-bit originals and 59 infrared 8-bit originals. It covers selected coastal tiles, not the entire state or every raster in the services. RGB and RGBN originals have not been captured. Layer records provide archive totals and preserved service metadata.

Spatial analysis
Reading beyond the visible compares RGB and CIR rendering, examines bit depth and contrast stretches, and calculates vegetation indices and threshold sensitivity from matched 2004 products.
